Shotokan training is usually divided into three parts:
Kihon (basics)
Kata (forms or patterns of moves)
Kumite (sparring)
Techniques in kihon and kata are characterized by deep, strong stances and powerful movements that demonstrate stability and strengthen the legs. Strength and power are often demonstrated instead of slower, more flowing motions.
Students begin training with basic movements at a basic level, but progress to being more flexible with greater experience.
Physically, the regular warm-up stretches and class training routines will help increase flexibility and cardiovascular conditioning. With continued practice and effort, Karate improves focus and coordination. Mentally, it improves focus and discipline. Spiritually, Karate builds confidence and self-esteem. Recognition of achievement will improve self-confidence. The challenging workouts and learning something new provide incentive to try again.
No. Self-defense techniques are for self-defense only. Non-violence is stressed. Options to avoid conflict are also discussed.
The Shotokan Karate Federation of Michigan is dedicated to teaching in a safe, controlled, and friendly environment.
